| Peace Memorial Day on February 28 commemorates an incident that had a profound impact on the people and society of Taiwan. It is generally known in Taiwan as 228 Memorial Day. The number "228" refers to the day the massacre began: February 28, or 02-28. At the end of World War II, Taiwan shook off the yoke of 50 years of Japanese colonial rule. In 1947, Taiwan was an island in turmoil. On February 27th 1947, the tragic events were set into motion when the police confiscated black market cigarettes from an elderly Taiwanese woman. 228 Memorial Day is a call, not only for the Taiwanese people, but for the people of the world to seek peace. |
