New Year's Day is the first day of the year. All countries which follow modern Gregorian calendar will celebrate this New Year at January 1 from Ancient Roman period although other dates were also used in Rome. In all countries except Israel New Year is a public holiday. It is celebrated with fireworks at the midnight as entering into New Year. January 1 on Julian calendar corresponds to January 14 in Gregorian calendar. So Eastern Orthodox churches which follow Julian calendar celebrate the New Year in January 14. People around the world will greet each other with “Happy New Year!” wishes and these wishes will be heard until the first few weeks of the year. On this day most people excited to throw parties to friends and relatives. It is customary in most countries to throw dinner parties with food items like cakes, confectionaries, bakes etc. It is a very special festival to Ukrainians as people will wait eagerly throughout the year for this holiday. This day has also some sentimental values to Ukrainians. According to their tradition a persona will spend his year the way he welcomed it. So everybody will try their best to make the New Year special. In Ukraine the people will celebrate the New Year by decorating the New Year Tree with presents and gifts. As in like most of other countries Ukrainians will cook festival dinners and send greeting cards to friends, family and relatives. Kids will wait for Ded Moroz like Santa Claus in the culture of the eastern Slavs who will come to each house and put gifts under the tree. On this day the President will address the nation which will be broadcast throughout the nation.
