About Victory Day
In Europe and North America the allied victory over Nazi Germany is celebrated as Victory Day in May 8th. But in Ukraine like other former Soviet Union countries celebrate the Victory Day on May 9. This is a Soviet Statutory holiday introduced in 1965 by Leonid Brezhnev to celebrate the victory over Nazi Germany. It is officially called as Great Patriotic War. While it is customary to pay tribute to the surviving veterans this is also part of the current political discourse in Post-Soviet era. This is a national holiday in Ukraine.
