| June 19 of every year is the Birthday Artigas, Jose Gervasio. It is a national holiday for Uruguay. He is called in local language as hosa harva'syo arte'gas. He is a national hero of Uruguay. Sometimes, he is also called as “the father of Uruguayan independence”. He was born in June 19, 1764 in Montevideo. Artigas was a gaucho or cowboy in his youth. He moved to the countryside and worked on his family's farms at the age of 12. He excelled at marksmanship and riding and tried his hand on smuggling from Portuguese-controlled Brazil. In 1811 he joined in the revolution against Spain and became the leader of the Orientals. Artigas commanded Uruguayan revolutionaries in the war of independence against the Spanish from 1810 to 1811. He conquered almost all of Uruguay except for the city of Montevideo. In 1813 Artigas-supporting delegates to a constitutional assembly in Argentina who were rejected by the Buenos Aires government leading to a civil war between the Artigas faction and Buenos Aires. Artigas participated in the siege of Montevideo which the Spanish still held. In 1815 he entered Buenos Aires. In 1816 Portuguese invaded Uruguay by defeating Artigas. After a 4-year struggle with the Portuguese, Artigas's forces were defeated. From then on Artigas lived in exile in Paraguay. He died in Asunción on Sept. 23, 1850. Although Uruguay got its independence after his death only, the people of Uruguay celebrate his birthday to commemorate the beginning of struggle for independence. |
