About Constitution Day
July 18 is Uruguay’s Constitution Day. It is known in Uruguay as Jura de la Constitución de la República Oriental del Uruguay. It marks the anniversary of adoption of Constitution by Uruguay. After being ratified by Argentina and Brazil, the first constitution of Uruguay was adopted in July 18, 1830. The constitution restricted voting, made Roman Catholicism the official religion, and divided the territory into nine administrative jurisdictions known as departments. In 1951 a new Constitution came into effect. The constitution day in Uruguay is a national holiday in Uruguay. From 1830 the Uruguayan government will celebrate the Day annually. This day is celebrated with great enthusiasm and zeal throughout the nation.
