About Family Day
Most of the Uruguayans are Roman Catholics. There is a sharp separation between church and state in Uruguay. Many traditional Catholic religious holidays have been renamed for secular purposes. Christmas is renamed to Family Day. In this sense Christmas and Family Day in Uruguay are same. Christmas also referred to as Christmas Day is always observed on December 25th and 7 January for Orthodox Christians. Christmas Day, is an annual Christian holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, the son of God. According to Gospels that Mary was a virgin when she became pregnant. In the Gospel of Luke, Mary was visited by an archangel Gabriel who brought the message from God that she would give birth to the son of God. According to Gospel of Matthew, Joseph was visited by an archangel Gabriel who told him to marry Mary rather than send her away or expose her pregnancy. On December 25, people around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus. Some people celebrate it by distributing gifts and greeting cards to each other. Children may ask Santa Claus for new toys and presents. Families will go to the church.
