| Memory and Honor Day is celebrated in Uzbekistan on May 9. This holiday is celebrated in honor of the memory of the patriots who fought for the protection of the native territory, its freedom and independence and the peace life for the people of Uzbekistan. The Uzbek people made a great contribution to the victory in World War II. Around 1.5 million people from Uzbekistan fought and more than 450,000 died in the World War. On the initiative of President Islam Karimov May 9 was declared the Day of Memory and Honor. It was made a holiday in 1999. In 1999 majestic Square of Memory has been opened in capital of Uzbekistan on 9th May and since then Day of memory and honor on May, 9th is celebrated. On that day many people gather at the Square of Memory to honor people who died in battle against fascism. |
