| About D Hamilton Jackson Day |
| David Hamilton Jackson Day is celebrated on November 1st of every year. It is a local holiday in the U.S. Virgin Islands. David Hamilton Jackson (1884-1946) was resident of the United States Virgin Islands which was under the rule of Danish West Indies. He was an important figure in the struggle for increased civil liberties and workers' rights on the islands. He petitioned for freedom of the press, was involved in the territory's labor movement. When the Danish West Indies became the U.S. Virgin Islands in 1917, he lobbied for citizenship for the islanders. With the help of Ralph Bough, Jackson organized the first labor union in the Danish West Indies in 1913. Liberty Day commemorates David Hamilton Jackson and the institution of Free Press in the Danish West Indies, now the U.S. Virgin Islands. “Liberty Day” is celebrated on 1 November—the day Jackson printed the first addition of the Herald in 1915—in appreciation of his efforts on behalf of the people. |
