About Martin Luther King Day
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a United States federal holiday celebrating the birth of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., which is observed annually on the third Monday of January each year. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is one of four United States federal holidays to commemorate an individual person. King’s actual birth date is January 15, 1929. King, a Baptist Minister, was the most prominent civil rights leader and human rights icon in American History, leading nonviolent protests including the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott. King is also regarded as one of the greatest American orators in history; his most famous speech, referred to as his "I Have a Dream" speech, was delivered during the 1963 March on Washington, a political rally that was attended by over 200,000 people. King is also the youngest person to ever be awarded the Noble Peace Prize at age 36 in 1964. King’s efforts on forwarding civil rights, ending poverty and opposing the Vietnam War were his key issues. On April 3rd, 1968, King gave his "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech at Mason Temple, the World Headquarters of the Church of God in Christ in Memphis, Tennessee, during which he referenced threats against his life but said that he did not fear death, and although he may not live to see his dreams realized, he was sure they would come to pass. The next day, King was assassinated; he was shot at 6:01 p.m. April 4, 1968. James Earl Ray was arrested for the crime and confessed, but he later recanted his confession. Ray was sentenced to 99 years in prison.
