| About April Fool's Day |
| Although not an official holiday, April Fool’s Day is celebrated on April 1st of each year in many countries around the world. April Fool’s Day is a day for playing practical jokes, pranks and hoaxes. In some countries, the tradition of the April Fool’s Day jokes, pranks and hoaxes only lasts until noon and if one is to play a joke, prank or hoax after noon on April Fool’s Day, it is they who are the April Fool rather than the person who the joke, prank or hoax is played on. Although the exact origin of April Fool’s Day is not known, many speculate April Fool’s Day may have come to pass when a new calendar system was put into place; if one adhered to the old system, they were an April Fool; other cultures say an April Fool was someone who planted their crops too early during March instead of April. Some more famous April Fool’s Day pranks that have been committed over the years include the 1996 Taco Bell prank, in which Taco Bell bought an ad in the New York Times claiming they’d purchased the Liberty Bell from the United States government and renamed it the Taco Liberty Bell and in 1998 the hosts of the shock radio show Opie and Anthony announced the death of Boston mayor Thomas Menino after a car accident, which led to Opie and Anthony being fired by WAAF. The lesson here is to plan your April Fool’s Day jokes carefully; while it’s absurd that the Liberty Bell has been sold, it’s a very well executed April Fool’s Day prank, where as reporting the untimely death of someone is a poorly concocted April Fool’s Day joke, proving that fooling someone is only half of the mission of an April Fool’s Day prank; an April Fool’s Day should be funny and should be absurd, something that people should question whether or not is true. An April Fool’s Day prank should never cause bodily harm or mental anguish, but should provide a good chuckle for all. |
