About Buddha Descension Day
Buddha’s Descension Day is a Buddhist holiday. It is celebrated by Buddhists in commemoration of the descension of Buddha from heaven after his death upon his disciple’s request. It falls on the 22nd day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar. On modern Gregorian calendar it usually falls on October/ November. According to Buddhist tradition, Buddha when he was at the age of 41, he attained his enlightenment after six years of meditation. He then ascended to heaven to preach to his mother. Her mother was died when he was only seven years old. His devotees on the earth were worried about him. Following the request of all his devotees, another disciple of his, Mao gyel ge bu, who was known to possess miraculous powers, ascended to heaven and requested Buddha to return to earth. Upon his request Buddha descended to earth. On this occasion, the Buddhists around the world celebrate the Buddha’s Descension Day.
