| About Saint Florian’s Feast |
| St. Florian's Feast Day is celebrated on May 4 every year. Saint Florian the patron saint of firefighters and chimney sweeps is also the celebrated patron of Linz, Austria and Poland. St. Florian is also the patron of Upper Austria, jointly with Saint Leopold. His protection is also invoked against flooding and drowning. Florian lived in the time of the Roman emperors Diocletian and Maximian, and was commander of the imperial army in the roman province of Noricum. He was also responsible for organizing firefighting brigades. Emperor Diocletian mounted some of the fiercest persecutions of the early Church especially in the East of the Empire. Florian converted to Christianity and his secret beliefs were discovered when he refused to make sacrifices and worship the Roman gods. He was sentenced to death but first tortured by a variety of cruel tortures. He was thrown into the Enns River with a mill stone tied around his neck. Among the miracles attributed to him, he on one occasion put out a fire with a bucketful of water. |
