| About St Stephen's Day |
| St. Stephen's Day is a Christian saint's day celebrated on 26 December in the Western Church and 27 December in the Eastern Church. St. Stephen’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland, but the celebrations have little connection to the Saint. St. Stephen's Day honors the first Christian martyr, stoned to the death shortly after the Crucifixion. It commemorates St Stephen, the first Christian martyr or protomartyr. Many people spend St. Stephen's Day quietly with close friends or family. Early in the morning of St. Stephen's Day, the wren is carried from house to house by the boys, who wore straw masks their faces with burnt cork, and dressed in old clothes. Some Christians attend special church services to remember St Stephen's life. |
